Creative Business Spring Training Programme

Upstart @ University of Greenwich present the new spring training programme where participants can pick and choose learning from a range of evening modules and one day intensives.

The programme supports new and existing businesses in the Media Arts – this includes: Publishing, Interactive and Graphic Design, Audio-visual (sound, music, games, film and video), Performing Arts, Theatre and Visual Arts.

Workshops will feature guest speakers from across the creative industries.  Speakers on previous courses have included: James Parr, a branding expert with innovative design company IDEO, Joanne Sawicki, a media business consultant with over 20 years of experience in organisations such as the BBC and Sky and Michael Smith, founder and director of leading design agency Cog Design.

The Business of the Performing Arts

This intensive five week evening course will provide a comprehensive overview of setting up and running a successful and sustainable performing arts company putting in place systems and strategies to thrive not just survive. Covering planning and management, fundraising and income generation, and venues, touring and marketing, as well as creating an achievable vision for your company, this programme will ensure you’re on the road to success.

The course is suitable to individuals or groups who are considering setting up their own performing arts company (theatre, dance and street arts/circus) or those in the early stages of trading.

The programme will be run by creative business consultant Sinead Mac Manus who has worked for a wide range of arts organisations, including Mimbre, Frantic Assembly, Tall Stories and movingeast. Sinead is currently CPD Leader at University of Greenwich and a freelance arts consultant, producer and trainer working in the theatre, dance and street arts/circus sectors. She specialises in organisational development, training and 1-2-1 support for performing arts companies and has devised and run training events for CIDA, PANDA and CIBAS. In partnership with Forbidden Theatre Company, she has been running the New Company’s Survival Guide course since 2006 and it the author of ‘eVolve Handbook: a practical guide to producing performance’, co-authored with Kerry Irvine and commissioned by P.I Network, Brunel University. Prior to her arts management career, Sinead had a successful career as an Urban Planner in the corporate and local government sectors. She currently sits on the Board of Theatre Venture and the Steering Committee of Londondance.com and was a dance assessor of the Arts Council for many years.

Introduction to Creative Event Management

Event management is a rapidly growing and exciting profession in Britain, with London at its epicentre. This intensive five week evening course will provide students with an introduction to event management and production and will cover event planning, design, funding and sponsorship, marketing, risk management, production and evaluation.

From festivals and exhibitions through to commercial and charity events, this intensive programme looks at all the aspects of management needed for a successful event.

The programme will be run by international event manager Sandi Goodwin. Sandi has a strong background in event management and artistic production and has worked as an Event Manager, theatre, dance and festival producer in Britain and New Zealand for the past eight years. She has lectured in event management around the world and also works as a trainer. Sandi holds a Diploma in Event Management from AUT (Auckland, New Zealand) and a Diploma in Arts Management from Birkbeck in London.

Growing your Creative Business

Do you need support in growing or developing your creative business?
Do you want to gain a Postgraduate Professional Development qualification?Then, the Growing your Creative Business training and business support programme could be for you.

The programme supports existing businesses in the Media Arts – this includes: Publishing, Interactive and Graphic Design, Audio-visual (sound, music, games, film and video), Performing Arts, Theatre and Visual Arts.

If you are self-employed or running a business in one of these sectors we want to help you gain the right skills and experiences to take your creative business to the next level. Our accredited postgraduate programme aims to help you:

  • develop entrepreneurial knowledge and skills via practical training and inspiration from entrepreneurs in the creative industries
  • generate and implement innovative approaches and new and alternative practices in skills and ideas development
  • build and manage networks and relationships with other entrepreneurs and businesses in your creative sector

The programme consists of 10 weekly evening sessions (6.30pm – 9pm) from 8th January 2008 to 11th March 2008 at University of Greenwich’s Maritime site. The programme includes seminars and practical workshops from inspirational guest speakers from the industry, individual tutorials and student presentations. You will also benefit from 1-2-1 mentoring/coaching with an experienced creative practitioner.

Upstart is Hiring

We are looking for an energetic and dynamic entrepreneur and communicator, preferably with some teaching experience, for our programmes, Creative Startup (summer) and Creative Commerce (winter).

CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD) LEADER

(REF 00695) (P/T – FX)

School of Humanities

The Upstart project within the School of Humanities at the University
of Greenwich provides training and support for new entrepreneurs in
the creative industries. We are looking for an energetic leader for our
flagship course, Creative Commerce, a weekly three-month
programme of seminars for startups and new entrants in the media arts
sectors (audiovisual, performing arts, design and publishing).

The CPD leader will be responsible for both overall coordination and
delivery of some elements of the Creative Commerce course, and
sourcing professionals in the creative industries to serve as guest
presenters and mentors.

The CPD leader is expected to contribute significantly to the design,
development and delivery of Creative Commerce, and the Upstart
programme. You should have a track record of entrepreneurial
activity and/or business support in the creative industries, and some
teaching and curriculum management experience.

This post is part –time (17½ hours per week) to 30 September 2007.
There may be the opportunity to extend the post for a further term
from October 2007.

Salary scale: pro rata to £29677 – £34701 per annum inclusive

Intellectual property resources

Creative London has set up Own-it, an online resource centre for advice on intellectual property for artists and creative entrepreneurs. Check also the British Library’s new Business and IP Centre.

The British Library is now running an Enterprise Week with a packed schedule of talks and events.
